Hit or Miss 109 – 5

Four hundred and fifty years of experience eased itself into the elastic-waisted cream trousers last Sunday. Every ounce was needed to counter the wiles of the pitch, and perhaps flatten it a bit as we plodded up and down its length. Not that there was much run-stealing from the openers as Lee dealt in boundaries while Harvey’s season appears to have entered a phase of quiet consolidation.
Lloyd showed great skill in chiselling out 38 and Hogben swung gamely for 27. We reached 100 and looked like going no further when the home side thought they’d run out Dunne. However umpire Jeyaratnam gave an obscure signal which turned out to be an order for his second jug of Pimms from the pub across the road. But the cricket-loving crowd had no complaints about the decision as Dunne went on to belt a scintillating 46 not out.
The fans had rather less to cheer about after the break as Douglas hit the pause button from the top end. d’Inverno managed to keep the home team in the hunt and the Lloyd/ Harvey pairing cleverly conjured middle-order wickets. But the arrival of a plucky young blocker signalled the end of the chase and a finish followed as limp as the mint in Vijay’s glass.
