Hit or Miss is (with the
possible exception of Stonor) the finest example of great pub, great setting, "tricky" pitch. The oppo stuck the 'Enders in and
opened up with their usual pairing of Skelenar (Don Julio) and Barnes. A solid
start from Lee and MacDonald followed. Lee unfortunately fell for 20, but the
momentum was kept up with a quick fire 21 from King and an agricultural 62 from
Cooper. There was a definite wag in the 'Enders tail but some tight bowling and
a few sharp catches kept the 'Enders to 145 all out.
The reply from the oppo was
somewhat lacking in oomph. Debate still rages as to the reasons for this. Some
(perhaps unfairly) suggest the oppo were suffering the effects of too much home
made banana cake at tea (it was delicious); others point to the fact that they
were a little light on batting and rightly terrified of exposing their middle
order to the likes of Lyon and Dunne. At one point not even the skippers 4
slips and 2 gullies with one man only on the leg side was enough to entice the
oppo.
In any event, the 'Enders
as usual did their inadvertent best to make a game of it, notably squandering a
run out where both batsmen found themselves at the same end arguing as to
whether they had crossed or indeed whether it was possible to cross where one
batsman had stubbornly refused to leave his crease in the first instance.
Predictably, however, as the light failed and boredom set in, the came petered
out into a winning draw for the chaps from the big smoke.
Still, a lovely ground and
pub and we look forward to another go next year and a great day out.
