Weekenders
overcome Volcanic turmoil to beat Stonor
Stonor
174 for 8 declared (39 overs), WCC 176 for 4 (34 overs)
Weekenders
win by 6 wickets.
Almost as unlikely
as Dunne being stuck in San Francisco by a volcanic ash cloud, the
Weekenders' tough-minded middle order won us our first game of the season.
D'Inverno won the toss and inserted, Stonor got off to a fair start in the
sunshine despite the lively new ball pairing of Erasmus and Douglas.
They raced away in
the middle of the innings and were at one point going at six an over.
But weekenders came back into it after a nerveless
mile-high caught and bowled from Collett and two wickets from Hudson slowed
Stonor down.
Douglas came back with dot after dot at the death leading to some rash shots at
the other end.
Stonor declared on 174 for 8 at tea.
Tea was excellent particularly for those of us trying
to catch up on a missed lunch after a freak
kitchen closure at the Crown Inn in Pishill.
The Weekenders
started slowly. Mcdonald and Lee
tired out the opening bowlers before Wahi and Taylor watchfully brought down the total. Hudson then played some big shots before debutants Taylor and Collett saw us home. 6 wickets and 3 overs to spare.
Taylor in particular shone with a refined 50.
King
wore Sachin Tendulkar's trousers.
Sunny day, brilliant
ground, sporting oppo and some good cricket, and it is only April.
