It’s been 18 years since The Weekenders registered a victory against Hertford CC. Ignoring 2014’s historic 4-run choke, this year was about as close to an astonishing triumph since Martin Bicknell last topped the County bowling averages. A slew of last-minute squad withdrawals meant three players were borrowed from Hertford reserves. The hosts like to score at least 250 in their innings, and in 33C temperatures, the ‘Enders did well to keep them under 300, but 295 still looked an unlikely target to surmount.

Enter NJ Shimoga  - surely a modern Weekenders legend, who scored an exhilarating century last year. After Radio Five Live’s Hussaini & Aziz departed, Shimoga partnered A. Bartlam, a welcome gift from the oppo for a 157 run third-wicket partnership. NJ’s century innings was virtually chance-less, including 25 boundaries. After his departure for 133, Bhuvan Sharma came in at five as the ‘finisher’. He played an ice-cool hand, even as an untested middle-order fell around him - I’ll let Weekenders GOAT, Chris Douglas, pick up the live commentary…
