WCC vc Hit or Miss
Match drawn.
We enjoyed a big stroke of luck against
our oldest rivals: the field next to the ground had been planted with sweetcorn
this year instead of broad beans, making it much easier to find balls which had
been whacked for six off our bowling.
But on the field of play we couldn’t
catch a break – or anything much, apart from a couple of dextrous grabs by
Hudson and Toby Lyons. Last year Douglas had the good fortune to pull up lame
after a solitary delivery; this year it was Orwell’s and Dunne’s turns to be
niggled out of the attack early on, while Douglas suffered the broad blade of
Kelvin Jones, who smashed a not-out ton inside 90 minutes.
WCC’s response started steadily, with
Laurie and Twigg facing the hosts’ teasing attack. Then wickets fell and the
required rate rose. But thanks to Extras (who top scored with an effortless 36)
and some rollicking, muscular batting from Dunne and Orwell, the Weekenders
reached a more than respectable 154 at the close.
